Alternative & Experimental R&B

Alt-R&B History Lesson Part I

The Foreign Exchange, a hip hop/R&B duo consisting of rapper/singer Phonte and dutch producer Nicolay, dropped their debut album “Connected” in 2004. Although primarily a work of hip hop, the heavy R&B influence gave a hint of what was to come on their sophomore effort “Leave It All Behind” in 2008.

“Leave It All Behind” also featured Muhsinah on a three tracks. Muhsinah was the first truly experimental R&B singer/musician I discovered. More about her in the next part.

I personally wasn’t too fond of The Foreign Exchange’s third album “Authenticity” (2010), but this tune is really nice. Darien Brockington, Zo! and YahZhara, featured on the previous album, contributed to this album too. Other featured artists were Jesse Boykins III, Median and Chantae Cann.
